About Sara and Ellis Fitness Studio
Who is Sara Ellis, and what sets her apart as a trainer?
Sara Ellis is a former World Cup mountain bike racer who competed on the legendary Volvo-Cannondale team, raced in countries across Europe and Australia, and participated in the 1996 Olympic Trials in Atlanta. Since 2002, she has brought that elite competitive mindset into personal fitness coaching. Her background means she understands performance, injury prevention, and what it truly takes to build lasting strength, for elite athletes and everyday people alike.
What makes Ellis Fitness Studio different from a regular gym?
Every session is one-on-one, your workout, your room, your program. There are no crowds, no waiting for machines, and no one-size-fits-all routines. Sara designs each program specifically for you, your goals, and your current physical condition. Ellis Fitness Studio is a bright, open space that includes AC and private parking in downtown Fairfax.
How long has Ellis Fitness Studio been open?
Sara opened her first fitness studio in Mill Valley in 2002 and ran it through 2016. She launched Ellis Fitness Studio under her own name in 2017 and recently moved to an expanded new space at 85 Bolinas Rd., Suite 20, in Fairfax, with more equipment and more room.
Training and Services
What types of training does the studio specialize in?
Ellis Fitness Studio specializes in:
- Slow-motion Strength Training – a controlled, high-intensity method that builds muscle safely and efficiently
- TRX Suspension Training – full-body functional fitness using bodyweight
- Spinning and Cardio – cycling-based endurance work
- Core and Abdominal Work – featuring the studio’s Super Slow Abdominal Machine for maximum results
- Stretching and Mobility – essential warm-up and recovery work tailored to your needs
Every program is designed around your goals, whether you’re a competitive athlete or simply want to move through daily life with more ease and confidence.
What is slow-motion strength training, and why is it effective?
Slow-motion strength training involves performing each repetition at a deliberate, controlled pace, typically 10 seconds up and 10 seconds down. This eliminates momentum, keeps muscles under constant tension, and dramatically reduces injury risk. The result is deeper muscle fiber recruitment and faster strength gains in fewer sessions. It’s especially effective for older adults, those returning from injury, or anyone who wants maximum results with minimal joint stress. Each training program is designed to make activities of daily living easier. Strength training is critical in sustaining bone density and helps with cognitive thinking.
Do you offer outdoor training sessions?
Yes! Sara offers both indoor and outdoor training. Outdoor sessions are a great option for clients who enjoy fresh air and natural settings — and Fairfax’s surroundings make for a beautiful training environment. The choice of indoor vs. outdoor is always tailored to your comfort and preference.
Are small group sessions available?
Yes. In addition to private one-on-one sessions, Sara offers 2 person group training. Small group sessions are a great way to train with a friend or partner while still receiving personalized attention and instruction. Contact Sara to discuss small group availability and scheduling.
Who It’s For
I’m a complete beginner. Is this studio right for me?
Absolutely. Sara works with clients at all fitness levels, including complete beginners. Many of her most enthusiastic clients are people who have never liked or committed to exercise before, and who finally found an approach that works for them. Sara’s style is encouraging, patient, and judgment-free. There is no baseline level of fitness required to start.
Do you work with older adults or those with physical limitations?
Yes, this is one of Sara’s greatest strengths. Many of her long-term clients are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, and she specializes in helping people maintain strength, balance, and agility. She’s also highly experienced working with clients who have chronic pain, past injuries, or medical considerations. Sessions are designed to deliver a real workout without causing harm, and Sara constantly adjusts based on how you’re feeling each day.
Can athletes or advanced fitness clients benefit from training here?
Definitely. Sara’s background as a World Cup athlete means she understands performance training deeply. She has helped cyclists, hikers, and sport-specific athletes improve strength, power, and endurance through targeted resistance and conditioning work. Whether you’re training for a race or just want to push beyond a plateau, Sara can design a program that challenges you at your level.
I’m intimidated by gyms. Will I feel comfortable here?
That’s exactly why Ellis Fitness Studio exists. There are no crowds, no mirrors packed with strangers, and no competitive atmosphere. When you come in, the studio is yours. Sara creates a warm, friendly, and private environment where the only thing that matters is your progress. Many clients say they tried other gyms for years, and never stuck with them — and that Ellis Fitness Studio finally made fitness feel sustainable and enjoyable.

Getting Started
How do I book my first session?
Getting started is simple. You can:
- Call Sara directly at (415) 297-1872
- Visit the Contact page on the website to send a message
- New clients are encouraged to schedule a Saturday orientation (10 AM – 12 Noon) to tour the studio and discuss your goals before committing to a program
What should I expect in my first session?
Your first session begins with a conversation. Sara will take time to understand your health history, current fitness level, past injuries, and personal goals. From there, she’ll walk you through some foundational movements to assess how you move and what you need. No two first sessions are alike — Sara customizes the experience from the very beginning. Wear comfortable workout clothing and bring water.
How often should I train to see results?
Most clients see meaningful results from training two to three times per week. However, Sara works around your schedule and lifestyle — some clients start once a week and build from there. With slow-motion strength training in particular, each session is highly efficient, meaning even two sessions per week can deliver significant strength and functional gains within the first month.
What equipment does the studio have?
The studio is equipped with professional-grade equipment, including the FreeMotion Dual Cable system, a Super Slow Abdominal Machine, TRX suspension trainers, spinning bikes, and a range of free weights and functional fitness tools. Please reach out directly at (415) 297-1872 as soon as possible if you need to change your appointment, and Sara will do her best to find a time that works for you.
Safety and Comfort
I have a chronic pain condition. Can I still train safely?
Yes. Sara has extensive experience training clients with chronic pain, past surgeries, arthritis, back issues, and other ongoing conditions. She is meticulous about designing workouts that build strength without aggravating existing problems. She constantly monitors your form and listens to feedback from your body throughout every session. That said, it’s always recommended to consult your physician before beginning a new fitness program.
How does the studio maintain a clean and safe environment?
Ellis Fitness Studio is a small, extremely clean, private space. Because sessions are one-on-one by appointment, there is no overlap between clients and no shared gym floor with strangers. The studio follows best practices, including thorough cleaning between appointments, ventilation, and — when appropriate — the option to train outdoors. Your health and comfort are a priority every single session.
